The Supreme Court confirms the results of the disputed presidential election at the end of July. However, it is not impartial. The opposition has a clear opinion on the court decision.
After the presidential election in Venezuela, which was overshadowed by allegations of fraud, the government-loyal Supreme Court has confirmed the victory of the authoritarian head of state Nicolás Maduro. This was announced by the president of the court, Caryslia Rodríguez. Due to a cyber attack on the electoral system, it was not possible to publish the results of the individual voting districts. The opposition candidate Edmundo González Urrutia described the court decision as invalid on the X platform.
The party-line electoral authority declared President Maduro, who has been in power since 2013, the winner of the election at the end of July. However, it has not yet published the detailed results. The opposition accuses the government of electoral fraud and claims victory for its candidate González. The USA and several Latin American countries have already recognized the ex-diplomat’s victory. The European Union and the Organization of American States also doubt the official election result.
No decision of the Supreme Court will replace the sovereignty of the people, González wrote in an X-post before the decision was announced. Venezuelans are not prepared to give up their freedom and the right to change in peace in order to live better. The President of the Supreme Court announced that she would forward the documents to the public prosecutor’s office, which is investigating the opposition for, among other things, distributing falsified election documents on a website.
The UN Fact-Finding Commission on Venezuela warned on social media that both the Supreme Court and the electoral authority were neither independent nor impartial. Both institutions were run by representatives of the ruling party and had been involved in state repression. The government had exercised undue influence over the court.
