The government of US President Donald Trump has ordered an end to the vehicle toll in New York, which has just been launched. The approval for the project was canceled, the Ministry of Transport said. The toll is a “slap in the face of the American working class and small business owner,” said US Transport Minister Sean Duffy. According to the media, the New York local transport authority announced that the toll will be prepared in court.
Trump, who owns several properties in New York, had been against the toll from the start. Now he wrote Truth Social on his online language tube that the toll is dead. “Manhattan, and all of New York, is saved.” In capital letters, he added: “Long live the king.” Shortly thereafter, the X-account of the White House published a AI-generated picture on which Trump can be seen in front of the New York skyline and bears a crown.
Since the beginning of January, New York has levied a fee of $ 9 for most drivers-this corresponds to a good 8.60 euros. There are some exceptional regulations, for example for low earners. With just a few exceptions, the fee -based zone applies to the entire southern part from Manhattan up to the 60th Street. The toll should not only reduce traffic, but also pollution. The money earned should flow into public transport and regional traffic and infrastructure projects.
Actually, the toll should come last summer and cost $ 15. The New York governor Kathy Hochul had initially stopped the project at the time due to economic concerns. The fees were reduced for the revised plan. There were protests and complaints against the controversial program, including politicians, taxi drivers and residents.
