China and USA set up AI communication channel

After the Chinese leader’s visit to the USA, the two countries are planning a new communication channel. It should be about the advantages and risks of AI.

China and the US wants to set up a communication channel for incidents related to artificial intelligence. China’s heads of state agreed on this Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump at their meeting in Washingtonas the White House announced. Chinese state media also reported a corresponding agreement.

Both countries want to have a regular dialogue about the risks and benefits associated with the technology. The next conversation should therefore take place in November at the latest. The White House statement also said that both sides had agreed on the term “superintelligence” used by Trump instead of the usual term artificial intelligence. The term artificial intelligence makes the technology appear “fake,” the US President explained his initiative.

It is not yet known how the US-Chinese dialogue channel will be structured and which authorities will be involved. The USA and China are considered the leading AI powers and face fierce competition for global technology leadership.

At the same time, concerns about the dangers of increasingly powerful artificial intelligence are growing in both countries. Leading American AI laboratories recently spoke out in favor of slowing down the development of particularly capable AI models in order to avoid a loss of control. Trump rejects this. The USA is with China AI far ahead – and he wanted it to stay that way, the US President always said.

China will also purchase ten million tons of coal from the USA in each of the next two years.
