Representatives of the United States and Iran have been meeting for weeks, and no progress has been made publicly so far. What does US President Trump think of this?

US President Donald Trump has expressed dissatisfaction with previous talks with Iran about its nuclear program. “I’m not happy with the way they’re behaving,” Trump said of the Iranians in Washington. “They should make a deal, that would be smart of them.” Iran has not yet agreed to renounce the possession and acquisition of nuclear weapons. “We want Iran not to have nuclear weapons, and they don’t say these very important words.”

At the same time, Trump commented on possible military action: It would be nicer if military action wasn’t necessary – “but sometimes you have to do it this way,” he said. Trump emphasized that he would not like to use the “strongest military in the world.” He also pointed out that he saw a risk of a prolonged conflict in the Middle East as a result of a US attack. “War always carries risks, both positive and negative.” He has not yet made a final decision about the next course.

In the middle of the month, Trump announced a deadline for a deal. He told reporters on a flight on Air Force One that 10 to 15 days would be enough. That is “pretty much the maximum”.

The USA and Iran last negotiated with each other on Thursday. They want to meet again on Monday. According to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, “technical talks” are planned in Vienna. The headquarters of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is in the Austrian capital.

The negotiations include, among other things, the controversial Iranian nuclear program. The USA wants to prevent the leadership in Tehran from developing nuclear weapons. Iran’s government denies such intentions, but appears ready to limit its nuclear program. In return, Tehran is demanding the lifting of tough economic sanctions.
