The implementation date of the General Safety Regulation (GSR) of the Ministry of Industry and Technology for the automotive sector has been postponed from July 7, 2024 to August 31, 2024. It was learned that with the postponement of the regulation, which will make systems such as collision avoidance, fatigue detection system, emergency braking assistant, lane tracking system, rear view camera, blind spot warnings, which were previously optional in new vehicles, standard, some vehicles that do not comply with the regulation will continue to be sold within the scope of current applications for a while. Istanbul Motor Vehicle Dealers Association President Hayrettin Ertemel evaluated the stock status of unequipped vehicles and the effects of the postponement on the market. Ertemel, who drew attention to the fact that the postponement only covers vehicles produced with national type approval, stated that discounts continue for these best-selling vehicles, and expressed that they think that similar vehicles in stock will run out by the start of the implementation.
“IT WILL BE COMING TO LIFE IN OTHER VEHICLES ON JULY 7”
Ertemel said, “The GSR regulation will come into effect on July 7th. As you know, this regulation includes some optional accessories in vehicles becoming standard, for example; reversing camera, collision avoidance accessories. The Ministry of Industry and Technology announced that this regulation has been postponed for 2 months. There is an important detail here, this postponement occurred in domestic vehicles produced in Turkey, which we call national type. Because, according to the EU acquis, all countries have to implement this GSR regulation on July 7th. For this, I would like to emphasize in particular; this postponement occurs in some brands and models that we call domestic production, and it will come into effect in other vehicles on July 7th.”
“THE MOST IMPORTED VEHICLES ARRIVED IN COMPLIANCE WITH THIS REGULATION”
Ertemel said, “Most of the vehicles imported from abroad were in compliance with this regulation. Some of the vehicles, brands and models we produced did not have these accessories. They will also have to use these accessories as of August 31.”
“WE DO NOT FOREEE A PRICE INCREASE AFTER THIS REGULATION”
Ertemel said, “If you ask how this will be reflected in the market, automotive prices are currently at a horizontal level. We do not foresee a price increase after this regulation is implemented again. We foresee that the reflections of this will be in the first quarter of 2025 in terms of pricing. Prices in second-hand automotive are also at a horizontal level, they are not increasing. We think it is beneficial to turn this into an opportunity for the end consumer.”
“WE FOREEE THAT THE VEHICLES WILL BE COMPLETELY CONSUMED DURING THIS PERIOD”
Ertemel said, “Dealers have been organizing serious campaigns for the last 2 months regarding these vehicles that they already have. However, the number of these vehicles is decreasing day by day. We predict that these vehicles will be completely consumed within this period. There will not be a big decrease in prices in that sense, the necessary decreases have already been made. When we look at the last 6-7 months, the only product whose prices have not increased is probably the automotive sector.”
“IT IS RELATED TO THE MELTING DOWN OF SPARE PARTS STOCK PRODUCED IN TURKEY”
Referring to the vehicles subject to postponement, Ertemel said, “These are best-selling vehicles, a 1-2 month extension was made for those vehicles. We think that this is an important decision regarding the liquidation of the existing spare parts stock produced in Turkey.”
