A British politician warns that the national army would quickly be exhausted in an all-out war. Reservists could be crucial.

According to media reports, a British Secretary of State for Defense is warning that his country’s army could quickly reach its limits in the event of a major war. In a war similar to that in Ukraine, the army could be used up in six months to a year, Alistair Carns told the Times newspaper, the BBC broadcaster and the Sky News television channel.

Russia is currently losing around 1,500 soldiers a day who are killed or wounded in Ukraine, Carns said at a conference in London. He is responsible for veterans affairs at the Department of Defense. “In a major war – not a limited intervention, but similar to Ukraine – for example, at current death rates, our army would be used up – as part of a broader, multinational coalition – in six months to a year,” he said, according to media reports .

That doesn’t necessarily mean that a larger army is needed, but that in the event of a crisis one has to create masses quickly, the “Times” quoted him as saying. Reservists are crucial in this case. According to the British news agency PA, the army currently has almost 110,000 members, including around 26,000 volunteer reservists.
