According to the Russian TASS news agency, residents of the Yakutia region of the Russian Federation discovered a baby mammoth fossil weighing approximately 180 kilograms and 120 centimeters tall.
Scientists who examined the fossil that emerged as the ice melted in June determined that it belonged to a baby mammoth that lived approximately 50 thousand years ago.
While it is estimated that the baby mammoth was about 1 year old when it died, it was named “Yana” because of the river basin where the fossil was discovered.
Russian scientists state that the mammoth fossil is among the best-preserved examples discovered so far.
It is known that there are only 6 well-preserved mammoth fossils in the world.
