The Ministry of Commerce has begun preparations for a comprehensive regulation in order to bring the installment limits on smartphone sales into line with market realities. Rising phone prices due to disruptions in the global supply chain and the increase in raw material costs made it necessary to stretch the existing installment scales.
The new regulation, shaped in line with the demands of sector representatives, is expected to bring dynamism to the shrinking retail market.
NEW INSTALLMENT LIMIT FOR SMARTPHONES HAS BEEN ANNOUNCED
According to the news of Türkiye Newspaper, with the new regulation, the 12 installment limit, which is currently 20 thousand TL, will be increased to 30 thousand TL or 35 thousand TL. In the current system, 12 installments could be made for devices whose price was below 20 thousand TL, while the number of installments was limited to 3 for models exceeding this amount.
The fact that cost increases increased the prices of entry and mid-segment models, especially those described as “accessible”, left manufacturers and GSM operators in a difficult situation.
With the increase in the scale, it is aimed for a wider range of models to benefit from the 12 installment opportunity and to support the purchasing power of the consumer.
MINISTRY TAKES ACTION
This change, which the economic management is working on meticulously, is expected to come into force at the end of May or in June.
The increasing demand with the rise in memory prices and the transition to 5G technology is expected to have a positive impact on sales with this stretch in the installment limit.
Experts estimate that the update in the installment limit will provide an increase of 15 to 20 percent in smartphone sales in the second half of the year.
The regulation is planned to both accelerate the digital transformation process and provide critical support to the technology retail industry. For high-priced devices that are above the installment limit, 3 installments will continue.
