Ukraine experienced one of the hardest nights since the start of the war – and the day after, Russia bombed another power plant. Ukrainian President Zelenskyj calls for a reaction.
According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Russia has attacked another power plant in Ukraine with bombs. The thermal power plant in Slovyansk, the largest city in the Donetsk region still under Kiev’s control, was hit, Zelensky said in his evening video speech. “Unfortunately, two people were killed and there were also injuries,” he said. The attack followed one of the worst nights of war for Ukraine with numerous impacts on energy objects.
In view of the targeted attacks on civilian infrastructure, Zelenskyj spoke of terror to which the world must respond. He cited recent sanctions against Russian oil companies as an example of such a reaction. These would have had a clear effect.
The Ukrainian head of state is therefore proposing further punitive measures against the Russian oil sector. “Oil exports are the basis of Russian arrogance and if sanctions remain in place or are tightened, Russia will suffer significant losses,” he said. He estimates that Moscow could lose around $50 billion next year. This is a powerful argument to pressure Moscow to end the war, he said.
