Several Senate Republicans are opposing Donald Trump. Its government limits the admission of refugees. All news in the news blog.

According to a media report, the US Federal Reserve (Fed) is planning significant job cuts in its banking supervision department. The head of the division, Michelle Bowman, announced on Thursday that she would reduce the number of employees by around 30 percent to around 350 by the end of 2026, the Bloomberg news agency reported.

The focus is on natural fluctuation, retirement and severance packages. The move is part of a broader plan by the Fed to reduce its workforce by about 10 percent in the coming years. The US central bank is following President Donald Trump’s general efforts to slim down the federal government. The Fed is also currently adjusting its supervisory framework for major banks.

The Trump administration is limiting the maximum number of refugees it can accept to 7,500. Priority should be given to white South Africans – people who resemble tech billionaire Elon Musk in terms of descent and appearance.

Under Trump’s predecessor Joe Biden, the limit was 125,000 people per year. The only reason given by the US administration was “humanitarian concerns or other national interest”.

The Republican-controlled US Senate has passed a Democratic proposal that would limit Donald Trump’s power to impose global tariffs without Senate approval. Similar motions had already passed the Senate before, specifically concerning tariffs against Brazil and Canada. However, the current proposal denies Trump the power to use emergency legislation to impose tariffs worldwide without Senate approval. The motion had a majority of four votes – one of the decisive ones coming from long-time Trump ally Mitch McConnell.

In order to come into force, the motion would also need the approval of the House of Representatives – however, the House of Representatives will not be in session until further notice. The reason: Trump confidant and House Speaker Mike Johnson has refused to convene the chamber for weeks.

US Vice President JD Vance spoke about his wife Usha’s faith at an event. “Do I hope that one day she will become part of our church? Yes, I honestly wish that because I believe in the gospel. And I hope that she will see it that way at some point.”
