The White House is festively decorated for Halloween – numerous children celebrate with the presidential couple. But not all Americans are enthusiastic.
Autumn leaves, pumpkins and violin players at the White House in Washington – First Lady Melania Trump and US President Donald Trump invited people to the annual “Trick-or-Treat” celebration in Washington in the evening. Countless children in unusual costumes stood in line with their parents in front of the south facade of the White House and were finally treated to chocolate bars by the presidential couple.
But not everyone was enthusiastic about the celebrations. While many fans commented on the pictures on social media as “beautiful,” many others criticized the action as tactless. Critics accused the Trump family of lacking sensitivity to the situation in the USA.
Many users online reacted with ridicule or outrage – including to Melania Trump’s festive decorations. Underneath a photo of the pumpkin parade at the south entrance of the White House, it said: “Instead of decorating the White House with food, you could give it to those who will soon have nothing left.” Another voice asked whether the pumpkins would be distributed to those in need – or whether they would be advised to eat sweets instead. “Great decoration – it’s just a shame that millions will soon have nothing to eat,” said another comment.
The background is the budget dispute that has been going on since October 1st. Since Democrats and Republicans in Congress have not yet been able to agree on a new budget, the USA is now in a shutdown: large parts of the government are blocked, salaries are not being paid, programs are on hold.
