Iran delegation is allowed to go to New York – but without luxury

Amid the ongoing conflict, the US is allowing the Iranian delegation to travel to New York for the UN’s most important diplomatic week of the year. But shopping is strictly limited.

This includes leather goods, watches, jewelry, shoes, cosmetics, perfumes or electronics worth more than $1,000 per item. Prior authorization is also required for memberships and purchases at wholesale chains such as Costco, Sam’s Club or BJ’s.

Expensive cars and alcohol are also subject to the shopping ban. The Iranian delegation is also said to include President Massoud Peseschkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi. According to experts, the Revolutionary Guards control more than half of Iran’s economy, including the lucrative oil industry. The terrorist organization distributes the profits skimmed from this mainly among itself – this is how it buys the loyalty of its members. The people see next to nothing of the billions in revenue from the country’s fossil treasures.

Although approval of the regime in Tehran is said to have recently only been around 20 percent, as the Wall Street Journal reports, the Revolutionary Guards still have a firm grip on power. This is due to the patronage and benefice system with which the rulers in Iran integrate the Shiite clergy, paramilitaries such as the Basij militia and part of the civilian population who sympathize with them into their apparatus. Loyalty pays off for supporters of the Iranian regime – and enables many of them to lead a Western lifestyle.

“Iran’s Islamic regime is corrupt to the core,” said Kasra Aarabi, head of IRGC research at the Middle East Institute WashingtonDC told Fox News. “While the regime’s clerics and IRGC commanders violently Islamize Iranian society and spread anti-Americanism worldwide, their sons and daughters in Western capitals live lavish lifestyles at the expense of blood money.”
