Ukraine will abolish the time change from 2025. Security concerns, among other things, lead to this decision.
Ukraine has decided to abolish daylight saving time from 2025 and permanently maintain winter time, also known as Central European Time. This decision was made for both health and safety reasons.
According to reports from the Interfax agency, Ukrainian MPs said that the time change had a negative impact on people’s biorhythms and caused health problems.
In addition to health reasons, the security policy demarcation from Russia also plays an important role. Ukraine justifies the move by saying that a uniform Kiev time should improve the country’s security situation and contribute to the reintegration of the territories occupied by Russia.
So far, Ukrainian summer time from the end of March to the end of October coincides with the year-round Moscow time. By abolishing daylight saving time, Ukraine wants to send a clear signal of independence from Russia and clearly differentiate itself from its war opponent.
For years, there has been discussion in many places about abolishing the semi-annual time change. The EU Commission has already suggested maintaining summer time permanently, but the decision lies with the member states – which have not yet been able to reach an agreement.
