Barack Obama appeals to voters – Elon Musk reacts immediately. The first results are in, Trump also comments. All developments in the news blog.
3:03 a.m.: A judge has rejected a request from the Democratic Party in Pennsylvania to extend voting hours near Lehigh University in the US state. For Bethlehem Ward 3, they asked to keep the bars open until 10 p.m. local time. According to CNN, the party said queues there stretched up to four hours. They accused the election authority of not providing enough voting machines and staff. The judge denied the request, according to CNN, but said registered voters still in line as of 8 p.m. local time would be allowed to cast their ballots.
3 a.m.: Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene defended her seat in the House of Representatives as expected. The AP news agency reported this based on voter surveys and initial vote counts. Greene continues to represent her constituency in the state of Georgia.
Since her election in 2020, the Republican quickly gained national prominence as one of the leading hardliners of her party’s right wing. She is known for her vehement support of Donald Trump and controversial positions – including on the issues of immigration and gun rights.
2:55 a.m.: The Democrat Kamala Harris secured the state of Illinois with its 19 voters in the US presidential election. This was reported by the AP news agency and Fox News based on voter surveys and initial vote counts. Illinois is one of the most populous states in the USA. The electors traditionally go to the Democratic candidate, as in 2020 to Joe Biden. At that time he was about 17 percentage points ahead of Trump. Harris is also said to be in the lead in Delaware.
2:51 a.m.: The Republican Donald Trump secured the state of Arkansas with six voters in the US presidential election. This was reported by the AP news agency and CBS News based on voter surveys and initial vote counts.
Arkansas is located in the southern United States. Already in 2020, Trump secured the electorate in the state with a clear majority. To become president, a candidate needs the votes of at least 270 voters.
2:45 a.m.: Further results of the post-election survey by Edison Research: Trump lost two percentage points to 59 percent among white men compared to 2020. Among white women, the decline was three percentage points to 52 percent.
Accordingly, 45 percent of Hispanics voted for Trump, 13 percent more than in 2020. Harris has 53 percent of the country’s largest minority. Among Hispanic men, Trump even gained 18 points to 54 percent. Hispanics make up about 19 percent of the U.S. population.
2.40 a.m.: Cheers! Those who prefer Kamala Harris are obviously in good hands at the Union Pub in Washington DC, notes t-online reporter David Schafbuch. The bar attracts its guests to the watch party with the “270 Challenge”: If the blue cocktail (i.e. the one in the color of the Democrats) is ordered 270 times (the number of voters a candidate needs to move into the White House), there will be a local round Liquor on the house.
To be fair, the same applies to the red cocktail in the Republican color or the one with the color purple, which symbolizes undecided voters. If you don’t want to commit yourself to color (and therefore politics), there are themed cocktails: “They’re drinking the cats,” for example, is a whiskey sour that is enjoyed out of cat straws and is reminiscent of Donald Trump’s infamous and unproven claim Recalls that in Springfield, Ohio, immigrants from Haiti kidnapped, killed and ate the pets of their American neighbors.
