It is the breakthrough after two years of war between Israel and Hamas. During the night both sides agreed on a peace agreement. The first reactions.
For two years, the Hamas hostages were subjected to malnutrition, threats and abuse, and for two years the Israeli army reduced the Gaza Strip to rubble. The conflict polarized not only the Middle East, but also the world: hundreds of thousands demonstrated around the world for the end of the Israeli military operation and demanded the release of the hostages. The first reactions to the agreement, which is to be signed in Egypt on Thursday at 11 a.m. German time, are correspondingly hopeful.
Federal Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU) has expressed relief at the agreement on a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. “I am happy about the breakthrough in the Gaza negotiations,” Wadephul wrote on the online service X on Thursday.
“The agreement on the first phase means that the release of the hostages and a ceasefire are finally imminent. Germany stands ready to “support further steps towards peace.”
Wadephul’s predecessor in office, Annalena Baerbockis also relieved by the agreement between Hamas and Israel. She describes the move as a “ray of hope.” “After more than 700 days of death, destruction and despair, we must seize this moment,” said the President of the UN General Assembly in a statement available to t-online.
She called for the terms of the agreement to be fully implemented. This includes, among other things, the release of all Israeli hostages and immediate and unhindered access for humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. Baerbock thanked the mediating states USA, Qatar, Egypt and Turkey for their diplomatic efforts.
UN Secretary General António Guterres called on both sides to abide by the agreement. “All hostages must be released in a dignified manner. A lasting ceasefire must be secured,” Guterres emphasized in a statement. The fighting must end once and for all and immediate and unhindered access of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip must be guaranteed. “The suffering must end,” demanded the UN Secretary General.
At the same time, Guterres called on everyone involved to use “this unique opportunity” to move towards a two-state solution that would enable Israelis and Palestinians to live in peace and security. “There has never been so much at stake,” he emphasized.
The German ambassador to Israel, Steffen Seibertexpressed relief at the ceasefire agreement. On the platform He is full of energy to work for peace, reconstruction and healing on behalf of Germany.
