Israel and Hamas sign a ceasefire deal. The plan is to start on Friday evening.
Israel and Hamas signed the ceasefire deal announced by Donald Trump on Thursday morning. An Israeli government spokeswoman said this on Thursday afternoon. The agreement is the first phase of the US government’s peace plan.
The ceasefire is scheduled to begin on Friday evening – 24 hours after a meeting of the Israeli cabinet and provided that cabinet members agree.
The meeting is scheduled to take place at 5 p.m. local time (4 p.m. CEST), followed by another government conference. “Within 24 hours of the cabinet meeting, the ceasefire in Gaza will begin,” the spokeswoman said. The Israeli army will then withdraw from parts of the Gaza Strip.
Hamas then has 72 hours to release the hostages. In addition to the release of Israeli hostages, the agreement also provides for the release of Palestinian prisoners from Israeli prisons and the delivery of aid.
According to Hamas circles, 20 living hostages will be released in the first phase of the ceasefire under the agreement. Two years after the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, the Islamists still have 47 hostages in their control in the Gaza Strip. According to Israeli sources, 25 of them are dead.
In return, almost 2,000 Palestinians are to be released from Israeli custody. According to information from Hamas circles, 250 of them are serving life sentences and 1,700 have been arrested since the start of the Gaza war.
