Trump and Putin seem to have agreed on new security guarantees for Ukraine. These could make Kiev’s wish to make NATO accession superfluous.
After the meeting between US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin at the Peace Summit in the US state of Alaska, Trump’s special envoy for Ukraine, Steve Witkoff, indicated that there could have been an agreement between the two heads of state. At the center of this unification, the question of possible security guarantees for Ukraine should be.
In a program by the US news broadcaster CNN, Witkoff said that it was agreed on a regulation that would equate Ukraine protection as in the context of NATO membership-but without a DE-FACTO membership in the military alliance. In his view, a future military support is the main reason why Ukraine is aiming for accession to the defense alliance. If the agreement is actually implemented, this wish is obsolete, since Ukraine would actually be secured against renewed attacks.
EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also signaled support for such a regulation. At a press conference in Brussels alongside the Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj, she said that the European Union and the “coalition of the willing” were ready to make its contribution to future security guarantees.
Selenskyj welcomed the announcements of the United States and Europe and emphasized that Ukraine rely on practical protection: “We need security guarantees that work in reality – similar to Article 5 of NATO”. Furthermore, Selenskyj confirms the endeavor of his country to join the future of the European Union, so to formalize further collateral.
According to Witkoff, Russia has also intended to commit himself to not occupying any other areas of Ukraine in a peace agreement. Also, no European borders should be exceeded, he said at Fox News.
Selenskyj is expected on Monday, accompanied by several European state and government heads in the White House in Washington. Another meeting with Vladimir Putin could take place at the end of the coming week. If this occurs, it would be possible that Selenskyj and Putin will negotiate with each other for the first time since 2022.
