Cast your vote for Kamala Harris. That was what the then oldest living former President of the United States wanted. Jimmy Carter has died at the age of 100. He was still able to fulfill his wish to vote in the last presidential election. However, not with the desired result: Carter fervently hoped that his vote would help prevent Donald Trump from becoming president again.

However, the ex-president was not seen at the whale urn in November. Carter voted by mail.

His last public appearance was three months ago. A video shows him being wheeled outside in a wheelchair by relatives on October 1st. At that time, Carter celebrated his 100th birthday.

The footage of Carter outdoors comes from CBS television. They show him surrounded by family and friends in his hometown of Plains, Georgia. Carter was driven outside because four military fighter jets were flying in formation in his honor, CBS wrote in a post on X at the time. There he attended the spectacle in his garden in the shade of the trees.

His poor health had already marked him back then. In the video, the ex-president can be seen half lying in a wheelchair, warmed by a blanket. It seems like he isn’t actually awake.

In the years before his death, Carter’s health had rapidly deteriorated. Almost two years ago, after several hospital stays, he stopped his medical treatment and sought home care.

Carter was the oldest living former US president. Read an obituary for Carter here. His old age was often a source of laughter, especially during the presidential election campaign. When 81-year-old US President Joe Biden was still in the race for the White House, comedian Colin Jost joked at the Washington press corps’ traditional gala dinner: “You know Jimmy Carter is out there thinking: I could maybe win this thing. ” When Biden had to throw in the towel after the disastrous TV debate against Trump, some people joked that Carter could run for Biden.
