Help in everyday life: If older people are injured in an accident, they need helping hands. If you don’t have that, you should consider senior citizen accident insurance.
A fall, a broken femur – and suddenly everyday life is only possible with support. What if you live alone and have no relatives or neighbors who can help? Then those affected have to hire service providers – that can be expensive.
According to the Rhineland-Palatinate consumer advice center, special senior accident insurance can be particularly useful for older people. Why – and what else there is to know:
With age, the risk of suffering an accident and being dependent on care increases. This can result in financial gaps. “The statutory insurance companies such as health insurance and nursing care insurance often only bear the financial burden under certain conditions or at least not in full,” says Anna Follmann from the Rhineland-Palatinate Consumer Center. In addition, there is no longer any statutory accident insurance in retirement.
It can also be difficult for older people to take out normal private accident insurance – the risk becomes too great for insurers. From the age of 75, the consumer advice center hardly has a chance.
Normal accident insurance covers permanent disability due to an accident and pays a monthly pension. Things are different with seniors’ accident insurance: it usually only provides benefits for the six months from the day of the accident, so it is not a permanent solution. After all: According to the consumer advice center, most injuries caused by accidents heal again; permanent disability is not the rule.
The insurance includes several components: The focus is on assistance that is combined with care and cash benefits.
It is important to check the duration of the assistance: According to the consumer advice center, it should be at least six months.
You should also make sure that the insurance not only organizes the assistance, but also pays for it. According to the consumer advice center, this should include the following services, among others:
Also important: According to consumer advocates, accident insurance for seniors should cover age-typical illnesses. This means: Illnesses such as a broken femur or arm, heart attack, stroke and diabetes should be considered an accident and therefore insured. In addition, accidents caused by medication should be covered by insurance.
