South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has declared martial law. As an ally of North Korea, Russia is following the situation particularly closely.
According to the Kremlin, Russia is concerned about the situation in South Korea after President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law. “The situation is alarming. We are monitoring it closely,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, according to the Russian news agency Interfax. Russia and North Korea are close allies. The two nuclear powers have just sealed a strategic partnership that also includes mutual military assistance in the event of an attack by a third country.
The Russian Embassy in Seoul and the Foreign Ministry in Moscow called on their citizens in South Korea to remain calm. Everyone should follow the recommendations of the authorities and not attend mass events, especially with a political orientation.
South Korea’s president accused the country’s opposition of sympathizing with North Korea. The declared state of emergency aims to “eliminate pro-North Korean forces and protect the constitutional order of freedom,” said Yoon.
