The number of electric cars in Turkey increased by 130 percent in one year

The number of electric cars in Turkey increased by 129.6 percent last year compared to the previous year, reaching 183 thousand 776, with the impact of Turkey’s car Togg hitting the roads.

According to the AA correspondent’s compilation of Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) data, the number of electric cars registered in the country increased significantly last year.

While 24 electric vehicles were registered in 2011, the first year that electric cars were registered, this number reached 952 in 2018. The 1000 threshold in the number of electric cars registered in traffic was exceeded in 2019, this number increased to 6 thousand 267 in 2021, 14 thousand 552 in 2022 and 80 thousand 43 in 2023. As of the end of last year, the number of electric cars registered in traffic increased by 129.6 percent compared to 2023, reaching 183 thousand 776.

The number of cars registered in traffic was calculated as 16 million 232 thousand 458 in 2024. The share of electric cars in registered cars was recorded as 1.1 percent. Thus, last year, 1 in every 88 cars in traffic was determined to be electric.

The increase in the number of electric cars in the country in the 2020-2024 period also attracted attention. In the said 5 years, the number of electric cars increased 66 times (6470 percent). Sales of Turkey’s automobile, Togg, were also effective in this increase.

THE NUMBER OF HYBRID CARS INCREASED BY 76 PERCENT

In addition to electric vehicles, the increase in hybrid fuel cars also came to the fore. While the number of hybrid cars was 33 thousand 690 in 2020, it increased to 391 thousand 296 by the end of last year. Thus, the number of hybrid cars increased 12 times (1061 percent) in 5 years.

The increase in the number of gasoline, diesel and LPG cars remained limited in this period. The number of gasoline cars increased by 53.3 percent in 5 years, from 3 million 201 thousand 894 to 4 million 908 thousand 203.

During the said period, the number of diesel cars increased by 10 percent, reaching 5 million 541 thousand 441 from 5 million 14 thousand 356.

The number of cars using LPG increased by 7.5 percent in 5 years, reaching 5 million 172 thousand 471 from 4 million 810 thousand 18.
