The internet is now in every aspect of our lives. These shared networks in cafes, hotels, homes, and workplaces also carry various dangers. When you connect to these networks, your personal data and device can become vulnerable to potential attacks. Authorities warn citizens not to enter personal information and not to open banking applications over Wi-Fi networks. The safest precaution that can be taken is to use a VPN connection.

MALICIOUS PEOPLE

Digital Communications Specialist Prof. Dr. Ali Murat Kırık stated that Wi-Fi networks have become weak in terms of security and that malicious people can use these vulnerabilities to steal data. Explaining that the attack method called the Evil Twin is quite dangerous, Kırık said, “In this type of attack, Malicious people create a network with the same name as the original and trusted Wi-Fi network. “When users connect to this fake network, malicious actors can gain access to their devices and steal their personal information. Evil twin attacks are common, especially in public places, and we need to be very careful,” he said.

It is especially necessary to pay attention to Wi-Fi networks in cafes.

DO NOT DO BANKING

Touching on the importance of using encrypted and secure connections, Kırık said, “When using Wi-Fi, be careful not to perform transactions such as banking on this network. “You should always take security precautions and be aware of the risks presented by such public networks. These simple but effective steps will greatly help you in ensuring the security of your personal information and devices,” he said.

USE VPN

İbrahim Güllü, Deputy Chairman of the Consumer Confederation, also drew attention to the dangers of unencrypted networks and stated that this could be a trap: “When connecting to any network, you should use a VPN, which protects your identity by encrypting your connection. In this way, the risk of pirated software developers accessing your information is significantly reduced. Connecting to sites where you use your personal data intensively, such as internet banking, shopping sites and e-government systems, via a public Wi-Fi connection may invite cybercrime.

YOU MAY BE CONSIDERED GUILTY

Güllü continued his statements with the following words:

“Sharing your Wi-Fi password may cause you to become a suspect in a cybercrime in the future. In such a case, saying “I didn’t do it, my neighbor/friend did it” may not do you any good because you won’t be able to prove it. Since the network in question is registered under your name, you may be considered a first-degree criminal.”

Güllü concluded his statements by saying, “The internet and the devices we use in connection with it are indispensable for business life. While technology makes our lives easier, it also brings with it many digital risks.”
