The cause is still open

A submarine cable between Estonia and Finland fails. The background is still unclear. This is not the first time that the connection has caused problems.
An undersea power cable between Estonia and Finland has malfunctioned for unknown reasons. The connection called EstLink 2 was then taken offline, said the Finnish operator Fingrid. An investigation into the background to the disruption is ongoing.
Estonia’s energy supply is guaranteed, the broadcaster ERR quoted the Estonian network operator Elering. According to ERR, EstLink 2 had already failed in January and was repaired by September. At that time the cause was a short circuit.
The Finnish authorities are also vigilant at Christmas and are working on the problem, wrote Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo on Platform X. “The failure of the transmission line has no impact on the Finns’ electricity supply.”
Malfunctions occur again and again with submarine cables; accidents are often caused by ship anchors, for example. However, data and power cables are also part of critical infrastructure and can therefore become targets for military operations.
