The US military releases video footage of a near collision between a Russian Su-35 fighter jet and an F-16 fighter jet of the American Air Force. A general speaks of one unprofessional behavior.
The Russian aircraft was one of two Su-35s escorting two Russian Tu-95 bombers in the Alaska air defense identification zone. Russian activity in this area occurs regularly and is not considered a threat.
But the latest interaction is rare, as both aircraft come extremely close. Such maneuvers were last observed during the Cold War.
The North American Aerospace Defense Command subsequently commented on the incident, saying: “The behavior of a Russian Su-35 was unsafe, unprofessional and put everyone at risk – not what you would see in a professional air force.”
