Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned – as the demonstrators demanded. Now the demonstrators want a Nobel Prize winner to head the transitional government.
After the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in Bangladesh, one of the protest leaders is calling on Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus to lead an interim government. According to the organizer of the student protests, Nahid Islam, this is the wish of the demonstrators. Yunus and his Grameen Bank were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 because he helped many people escape poverty by providing small loans. Yunus himself has not yet made any public comments on this.
After weeks of demonstrations, which reached their peak on Monday with the storming of Prime Minister Hasina’s palace and her flight abroad, the situation on the streets of the capital Dhaka was mostly calm in the morning. A curfew imposed by Hasina has been lifted. Discussions are underway for a transitional government.
At the same time, there were reports that further violence occurred on Monday and especially the following night. More than a hundred people were killed across the country, local media reported, citing local authorities among others. The victims are said to be mainly followers of Hasina, who resigned on Monday and fled the country. Protesters also reportedly stormed and looted the homes of members of Hasina’s Awami League party.
