Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy announced the death of Prof. Dr. Ahmet Coşkun Özgünel.
Minister Ersoy noted the following in his statement on his social media account:
“We have lost a veteran professor who made significant contributions to the development of Turkish archaeology in the last 50 years. Ankara University Faculty of Language, History and Geography, Department of Classical Archaeology retired faculty member Prof. Dr. Ahmet Coşkun Özgünel will now be remembered for the students he trained and his valuable works in the field of archaeology.”

Ersoy wished God’s mercy to Özgünel, who, in addition to the archaeological excavations he conducted in Çanakkale Gülpınar between 1980 and 2019, also headed the TRNC Salamis excavations between 1998 and 2012, and offered his condolences to his family, loved ones and the entire archaeological community.
