30 years after the crime, the US state of Florida is executing the death sentence against a prisoner. It is the first execution in Florida this year.
A 57-year-old prisoner was executed by lethal injection in the US state of Florida. The sentence was carried out on Thursday at 6:15 p.m. (local time), the Florida Department of Corrections announced. The man was sentenced to death in 1995 for murder and rape.
He killed an 18-year-old student in a national forest in Florida 30 years ago and raped his 21-year-old sister several times, court documents said.
According to the Florida Supreme Court, the man and a friend of his, who claimed to be his brother, met the siblings at a campsite in February 1994. During a walk, the man slit the 18-year-old’s throat and hit him several times on the head. He raped the 21-year-old during the night and the next morning.
The man was sentenced to death in 1995. According to media reports, his companion was sentenced to life imprisonment.
Florida’s Republican governor Ron DeSantis approved the execution in July. According to the Death Penalty Information Center, 13 people have been executed in the United States so far in 2024. In Florida, it was the first execution this year.
