After indications of a planned assassination attempt on Donald Tusk, the police arrest a suspect. The authorities speak of a serious threat situation.

Police have arrested a suspect following a planned attack on Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski announced this on X in the afternoon.

The man was caught in Lower Silesia, said the spokesman for the secret service coordinator, Jacek Dobrzynski. Tusk himself thanked the police officers for their quick and decisive action in an X-Post.

The security authorities also previously had indications that Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz could also be a target. According to the PAP news agency, Dobrzynski said the probability that the attack threats would be carried out was very high. “We’re taking this dead seriously.” A crisis meeting was therefore scheduled immediately.

Tusk learned of the danger on Sunday morning

Government spokesman Adam Szlapka told TVN24 that Tusk was informed early Sunday morning. “This signal was significantly more disturbing than similar signals in the past.” However, the head of government continued to work normally.

The EU and NATO country Poland is an important Western ally of the of Russia attacked Ukraine. It also feels like itself Moscow is threatened and is therefore significantly arming itself.

The tip is said to have been received by the government’s personal security department

According to reports in the Polish media, the information about the planned attack was initially received by email from the State Protection Service (SOP), which is responsible for the protection of people and buildings for the government and the president. This service informed the police.

As broadcaster TVN24 reported, the security services’ report shows that the whistleblower made contact via social media with a radical organization that was looking for volunteers for an attack with firearms. The whistleblower then met with a man named Krzysztof, with whom he discussed weapons, hatred of the government and planned mass murder.

As the daily newspaper “Rzeczpospolita” wrote, the author of the email to the security guard was not the potential assassin himself, but knew his plans.
