In Serbia, President Vučić’s ruling Progressive Party lost the parliamentary election. Putin’s friend personally admitted defeat.
After the parliamentary election in Serbia Long-time President Aleksandar Vučić admitted the defeat of his Progressive Party, which has ruled for many years. “Based on a stratified sample, it is clear that we lost these elections,” Vučić told his supporters at the party headquarters in Belgrade on Sunday evening.
The student list won the election and will receive between 135 and 140 seats in parliament, while his own party will have 105 seats. Other parties would have missed out on entering the people’s representation.
Before the polls closed, voter turnout had already reached its highest level in more than 30 years; in the months before the election, a protest movement led by students had massively mobilized against the government.
Vučić is said to have close connections to the Kremlin. He is considered a friend of the Russian president Vladimir Putin – although he tries to distance himself from it.
