South Korean President Yoon was removed from office in mid-December. Now the opposition is taking action against his interim successor.
Amid ongoing political turmoil in South Korea, the country’s largest opposition party now wants to impeach Prime Minister and incumbent President Han Duck Soo.
As Yonhap News Agency reported, Democratic Party (DP) Chairman Park Chan Dae made the announcement during a session of parliament. According to Yonhap, the exact timing of the introduction of a corresponding procedure will probably be decided at a meeting of the DP. Parliament would then have to vote later.
The opposition accuses incumbent President Han of delaying legislation that would help resolve corruption allegations against President Yoon Suk Yeol and his wife.
Yoon was removed from office by parliament in mid-December. Han then took over the official duties on an interim basis, while the Constitutional Court must make the final decision on Yoon’s future.
The Constitutional Court can either confirm Yoon’s removal from office or declare it unconstitutional. The court has scheduled the hearing to begin on December 27th.
The opposition accuses Yoon of violating the constitution. At the beginning of December, he completely unexpectedly imposed martial law, but hours later it was lifted again after massive resistance. Yoon defended his decision, saying he declared martial law to protect the nation.
He described his political opponents as “anti-state forces” who would paralyze government work and disrupt the country’s constitutional order.
