According to Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel is continuing its military operations in Iran and Lebanon – despite signals from Washington about a possible deal with Tehran.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced a continuation of attacks on targets in Iran and Lebanon. Netanyahu said in a video message that he spoke to US President Donald Trump on the phone on Monday.
Trump is convinced that there is an opportunity to use the “enormous successes” of the Israeli and US armies “to achieve the war goals in an agreement.” Such an agreement will “secure our vital interests.”
“At the same time, we are continuing our attacks in both Iran and Lebanon,” Netanyahu emphasized. Israel will defend its interests “under all circumstances.” The ongoing attacks would “destroy” Iran’s missile and nuclear program and inflict “severe damage” on the pro-Iran terrorist militia Hezbollah. “Just a few days ago we eliminated two more (Iranian) nuclear scientists and this is not the end,” Netanyahu continued.
The Israeli TV channel N12 reported, citing security sources, that the government was concerned that Iran’s highly enriched uranium might not be taken into account in a future agreement. Israel wants to prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons. The Iranian government denies such intentions. According to the broadcaster, Israel is working to ensure that a possible deal meets Israel’s conditions.
Trump had previously spoken of “detailed and constructive discussions” with the Islamic Republic, which would continue this week. According to Trump, the USA and Iran have agreed on around 15 points of a possible agreement. There are significant similarities on most points. Shortly before an ultimatum to Iran expired, he postponed plans for US attacks on Iranian power plants.
The leadership in Tehran rejected Trump’s statements about talks between the two countries. The influential Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said there were “no negotiations” with the US.
The US news portal Axios reported on Monday, citing an Israeli government representative, that US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner had held talks with Ghalibaf.
