Lufthansa fears an escalation in the Middle East – and is therefore cancelling connections. The airspace will be avoided.

Deutsche Lufthansa has suspended all flights to and from Tel Aviv and to and from Tehran with immediate effect. The airline said this was due to a short-term change in the security situation. The flights will remain suspended until September 19th.

All Lufthansa Group airlines will also avoid Israeli and Iranian airspace during this period. Lufthansa will continue to monitor the situation closely and will continue to assess the situation in the coming days. Affected passengers can rebook for a later travel date free of charge or alternatively receive a full refund of the ticket price.

The airline apparently fears a further escalation of the Middle East conflict after nine people were killed and almost 2,800 others injured in mass pager explosions in Lebanon on Tuesday. Hezbollah blamed Israel for the attack, but there was no initial comment from the Israeli side.

Hezbollah had instructed its members to avoid mobile phones and instead to use their own telecommunications system to prevent Israeli attacks. Pagers enable the reception of messages, among other things, via their own radio frequency and thus without the use of mobile phone networks.

Sources close to Hezbollah said that “the pagers that exploded were part of a shipment of a thousand devices recently imported by Hezbollah.” These appeared to have been “hacked at the source.”
