In Istanbul, lemons, one of the products whose prices have increased the most in recent days, have reached nearly 100 lira per kilo. In some markets in Istanbul, the price of 1 lemon has increased up to 10 lira. Lemons, which are 65-75 lira per kilo in the market, approach 100 lira by the time they reach the counter.
The abnormal increase seen in lemons was reflected in the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce (ITO) and TEPAV reports. In TEPAV’s food price index report for June, the highest monthly price increase last month was in lemons with 86.93 percent.
Lemon ranked first on the list of products with the highest price increase by the ITO with an increase of 56.64 percent. Market tradesmen cited the shortage of products in stock as the reason for the price increase in lemon. Citizens expressed their surprise at the high prices.
“THERE IS A DEMAND FOR LEMONS BUT PRODUCTION IS LITTLE”
Nurullah Dağıstanlı, a shopkeeper in Yenibosna, Istanbul, said, “The increase in lemon prices is due to the decrease in stocks in warehouses. There is demand but the product is low.”
