Discussions regarding “salt” consumption continue to increase in Turkey in recent years. At the center of the discussions are the allegations that the salt lobby disregards public health for the sake of profit, just like in sugary products. Turkey’s salt ration is literally in a catastrophic state. According to scientists, daily salt consumption per person should not exceed 6 grams; In Turkey, it is around 16 grams. In addition to the products sold as table salt in the market, the additive that poses the most threat to public health is Monosodium Glutamate (MSG), or “Chinese Salt”. While this substance, whose use is banned even in Pakistan, is currently used in many foodstuffs in Turkey, the lack of restrictions on MSG causes reactions.
IT DRIVES TO OBESITY
IT TRIGGERS MIGRAINE
Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine, Head of Nephrology Department, Prof. Dr. While underlining that MSG is addictive, Aydın Türkmen said: “MSG creates the perception of more protein in the foods it is added to than the real thing. This may distort or mislead the perception of taste, causing those foods to be consumed more, in other words, it may create a kind of addiction.” The harmful effects of glutamate are determined by its free form in foods. Excess glutamate causes headaches, migraines, involuntary movements, hyperactivity and autism. MSG even causes fibromyalgia.”
IT IS ADDICTIVE
Internal Medicine Specialist Dr. Ayça pointed out that ‘Monosodium Glutamate’ is in the excitoxin class. “Excitoxin overstimulates the cells, causing the cells to be damaged and die,” said Dr. Kaya, stating that public health is under threat and said: “Monosodium Glutamate additive triggers the release of appetite-increasing hormones by stimulating the receptors in the tongue and digestive system. Today, children and young people have become unable to taste other nutritious foods due to the consumption of fast food. People who are predisposed to foods containing Monosodium Glutamate are therefore very selective and tend to eat only these foods. “This is a kind of ‘addiction’ situation.”
WE FAILED THE CLASS!
Frightening report!
On the other hand, in the ‘table salt report’ prepared by the Turkish Cardiology Association in recent years, it was pointed out that daily salt consumption should be below 6 grams. While the report specifically focused on rock salt, it was emphasized that many rock salt samples contain substances such as plutonium, thallium and radium, and very small amounts of heavy metals such as lead. The TKD report also states that a healthy adult needs 1500 mg of sodium per day; The following warnings were given. “1 gram of salt contains 393 mg, that is, 17 mmol of sodium. 1 gram of sodium is equivalent to 43.5 mmol of sodium. One large teaspoon of salt contains approximately 2.3 grams of sodium.
