Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, in a written statement, evaluated the air traffic data of the Airports Council International for June, the second quarter and the first half of 2024.
Stating that Istanbul Airport achieved the highest increase in passenger traffic in the “Major airports” category in the first half of this year compared to the period before the Covid-19 outbreak, Uraloğlu said, “Istanbul Airport ranked first with an 18.1 percent increase in passengers, leaving Rome, Madrid, Barcelona and London airports behind compared to the pre-pandemic period.”
Uraloğlu stated that Istanbul Airport was among the top 10 European airports that showed the best performance in terms of freight traffic in the first half of the year compared to the same period last year.
Uraloğlu pointed out that Istanbul Airport’s leadership in Europe in terms of cargo and passenger growth is a source of pride for Turkey, and noted the following:
“These reports are the most important documents showing how appropriate and beneficial our investments and work are. Istanbul Airport became the airport with the highest passenger increase in the first half of this year compared to the pre-pandemic period. Istanbul Airport, which also achieved a 32.2 percent increase in freight traffic in the first half of the year compared to the same period of the previous year, ranks first among the top 10 airports serving in Europe. Sabiha Gökçen Airport, which is in the ‘Mega Airports’ category, is in second place with an increase in the number of passengers of 18.5 when the first half of 2019 and the same period of this year are compared. Antalya Airport, which is in the same category, is in fifth place with an increase of 7.1 percent.”
