3.54 am: Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton received a standing ovation on Monday before her speech at the Democratic Party Convention: “There is great energy in this room, just like across the country,” she said after thunderous cheers and applause from the convention attendees. As president, she will always have our support and she will fight for us,” Clinton said. “And she will enforce the right to abortion nationwide,” she continued, receiving further applause.
3.20 am: In his speech to the Democratic Party Convention, union boss Shawn Fain sharply criticized Donald Trump. He promised help for the auto industry, but nothing happened. He called Donald Trump a strikebreaker, then took off his jacket and revealed a T-shirt with the words “Donald Trump is a Scab.” The boss of the powerful UAW union called for support for Kamala Harris.
3.12 am: Kamala Harris made a brief surprise appearance at the start of the Democratic Party Convention. She announced a speech by Joe Biden later in the program and thanked him. “I thank you for your historic leadership, for your lifelong service to our nation, and for all that you will continue to do. We are forever grateful to you,” said Harris. The Vice President was combative. “We want to move forward. We have so much in common in America, more than divides us.” And then she called out to the convention delegates: “If we fight, we will win!”, based on the slogan of her election campaign “We fight, we win.”
“Trump will be a dictator,” McMorrow said. If the project goes ahead, Trump would fire public officials who don’t suit him, she said. She also warned that if Trump implements the concept, he could turn the FBI into his own personal elite force. Trump has so far distanced himself from it, although many of his former employees have worked on it.
Criticism of Project 2025 will play a major role during the Democratic Party Convention, with further speeches planned for Wednesday.
2.22 am: At their party convention in Chicago, the US Democrats confirmed Tim Walz as their vice presidential candidate for the November election. In a purely ceremonial vote, the several thousand delegates voted for the governor of the state of Minnesota as the so-called running mate for the Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris. The two had already been officially nominated before the party convention via online voting.
The party had brought forward the selection of candidates and carried out the process digitally – due to deadlines for printing ballot papers in one state. The voting procedure in Chicago is therefore purely symbolic in nature. According to the party, such a ceremonial vote is planned for Harris on the night of Wednesday in Germany.
