The Italian government plans to purchase communications systems from Elon Musk’s SpaceX for 1.5 billion euros. Shortly before, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni was with Donald Trump.
According to a media report, Italy wants to acquire a particularly secure communications system worth 1.5 billion euros from tech billionaire Elon Musk’s SpaceX company. Both sides are in advanced talks, Bloomberg News reported on Sunday. A five-year contract is planned; the government in Rome is concerned with secure communication.
Although a final agreement is still pending, the project has already been approved by the Italian secret services and the Ministry of Defense. SpaceX and the Italian Defense Ministry did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Reuters.
According to the report, SpaceX will provide Italy with encryption for telephone and internet services used by the government. Communication services for the Italian military in the Mediterranean and the introduction of satellite services for emergencies such as terrorist attacks or natural disasters are also planned.
