Just on Tuesday, the Pentagon chief announced several US attacks on boats in the Pacific that were said to have transported drugs. And now another one. Again there are fatalities.
The US military says it has carried out another deadly attack on a boat allegedly carrying drugs in the eastern Pacific. Four people were killed on Wednesday (local time), Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth wrote on Platform X. The attack therefore took place in international waters.
“The Western Hemisphere is no longer a safe haven for drug terrorists who bring drugs to our shores to poison Americans,” emphasized the US Secretary of Defense, who now calls himself Secretary of War. He only made a splash on Tuesday when he announced three attacks on boats in the Pacific – with a total of 14 dead.
For weeks, US forces have repeatedly attacked boats allegedly loaded with drugs in the Caribbean and the Pacific. Dozens of people are said to have already been killed – suspected drug smugglers, whom the US government calls “terrorists”. The approach causes a lot of criticism. UN human rights experts see this as a violation of international law.
A spokesman for UN Secretary-General António Guterres recently said in New York that they were “very concerned about the increasing military activities on the open sea.” It is important to avoid further escalation and to resolve conflicts through diplomatic channels. “Every time someone is killed, there must be accountability,” he stressed.
