With this new feature, Google joins a growing list of manufacturers adopting satellite communications in their phones, giving Android users a similar alternative to what already exists in the Apple ecosystem.
The first phone to feature this feature will be the Pixel 9, and for now, they will only be able to take advantage of this new feature in the US.
Google has not given a date for when this feature will come to other Android devices.
While Google stated in the introduction that the SOS service would be free for 2 years with the agreement made with Skylo, it did not provide information about what the price would be at the end of the 2 years.
Google explained on its support page that this feature will be activated once the software is updated and the service registers with the satellite network.
According to the news, you will be sent a notification when the function is activated. You will also be able to check the availability of the satellite service from the settings tab in the security and emergency option.
AVAILABLE ON iOS!
Apple announced Emergency SOS with the iPhone 14. This service also allows emergency communication via satellites. Apple extended the free use of the satellite service for iPhone 14 users and announced it as November 2025.
