Jolla is not actually a new company. For more than a decade, it has been developing an operating system called Sailfish OS as an alternative to the mobile software market dominated by Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS. This system is Linux based and does not rely directly on Android code.

Approximately 13 years after the launch of the first Jolla Phone model, the company is returning to the smartphone market with a new device with the same name. The new model focuses especially on issues such as digital sovereignty and control of user data.

The price of the new Jolla Phone is approximately 649 euros and the device has received more than 10 thousand pre-orders after it was introduced in December 2025. The first deliveries are planned to begin in summer 2026.

An alternative system to Android and iOS

The most important feature of the phone is that it uses an operating system that does not depend on Google services. Sailfish OS does not rely on Android’s open source code and therefore offers a software architecture that is independent of the Google ecosystem.

Despite this, the system has a compatibility layer that can run Android applications so that users do not experience application problems. However, there is a possibility that some applications may not work smoothly.

A phone made in Europe

The new model is produced in Salo, Finland. This city is known as the place where Nokia phones were produced in the past.

According to Jolla CEO Sami Pienimäki, users in Europe increasingly want to see “European technology” and the trend to reduce dependence on large American technology companies is getting stronger.

Hardware features

The new Jolla Phone has mid-segment features:

MediaTek Dimensity 7100 5G processor
8 or 12 GB RAM
256 GB storage and microSD support
6.36 inch AMOLED screen
50 MP main camera and 13 MP ultra-wide camera
5,500 mAh battery
The back cover of the device is replaceable and the battery can be removed by the user.

Niche but different approach

Jolla Phone is not expected to be a product that appeals to the masses. However, the project is seen as an important option for users looking for an alternative to the Google and Apple ecosystems.

According to experts, such initiatives have begun to attract more attention as discussions about technological independence and data sovereignty increasingly come to the fore in Europe.
