Regnier, one of the spokespersons of the EU Commission, made a statement at the daily press conference about the live broadcast that Weidel, the Co-Chairman of the far-right AfD party and prime ministerial candidate, made with American businessman Musk on X.
“We do not monitor or review the content of the broadcast. We look at the systems that the platforms have put in place. When you look at these systems, of course, within the framework of an ongoing trial, several pieces of evidence may emerge and be included in the current trial,” Regnier said. he said.
Stating that there are 150 personnel in the Commission working on the implementation of various aspects of the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), and that 2 or 3 personnel are assigned to review the systems during the live broadcast, Regnier said, “As the Commission, we are not responsible for individual content types.” He repeated his message.
The live broadcast in question had received reactions against the possibility of spreading disinformation before the elections to be held in Germany next month.
The fight between the EU and Musk is growing
Reactions against Musk, who will also take part in the new administration of Donald Trump, who was elected the 47th President of the USA, started with his posts praising the far-right AfD party and targeting some European politicians.
Musk’s posts supporting far-right parties in Europe drew reaction, and European leaders accused the billionaire of “interfering in elections and the internal affairs of countries.”
European politicians, European Parliament members and experts called on the EU to take action against Musk’s posts praising the far right on social media.
Investigation into DSA and X
The EU law, which came into force last year, imposed strict rules on major digital platforms.
The EU can impose fines of up to 6 percent of their global turnover on digital platforms that violate the rules. In case of repeated violations, the activities of the digital platforms in question may be terminated in the EU.
In this context, the EU initiated an investigation into X in December 2023. This investigation evaluates the compliance of X’s efforts to combat illegal and harmful content with the DSA.
