Electricity consumption increased by 9 percent in July

According to information compiled from the Turkish Electricity Transmission Inc. (TEİAŞ) data, the increase in electricity consumption due to hot weather in June continued in July.

Turkey, which spent June under the influence of scorching weather, continued this situation last month. According to the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service, the average surface air temperature recorded worldwide on Sunday, July 21, was 17.09 degrees Celsius, making it the “hottest day” on a global scale in recent history.

The global average surface temperature broke the record with 17.15 degrees on July 22.

During this period in Turkey, the use of air conditioning due to the need for cooling against hot weather was one of the main factors that increased electricity consumption.

Electricity consumption in July increased by 9 percent compared to the same month last year, reaching 34 billion 225 million 819 thousand kilowatt-hours.

INCREASE IN ELECTRICITY PRODUCTION FROM SUN AND WIND IS OVER 30 PERCENT

On the other hand, while the installed electricity capacity in Turkey was 107 thousand 465 megawatts on July 31, 2023, it will increase by approximately 3.4 percent to 111 thousand 105 megawatts by the end of July this year.

During this period, the increase in installed capacity also had a positive impact on total production. Due to the effect of warm weather, electricity production increased by approximately 10 percent to 34 billion 279 million 852 thousand kilowatt-hours.

The increase in the share of solar and wind in electricity generation was noteworthy.

The electricity production of solar power plants increased by 38.4 percent to 3 billion 211 million 390 thousand kilowatt-hours, while the electricity production of wind power plants increased by 34.5 percent to 4 billion 128 million 383 thousand kilowatt-hours.

Electricity production from other sources was recorded as 14 percent from natural gas, 14 percent from coal, and 10 percent from lignite.
