Can Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen continue to govern? According to initial forecasts, Denmark’s Social Democrats are performing historically poorly. They still remain the largest party.

According to initial forecasts, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen’s Social Democrats are once again emerging as the strongest force in the parliamentary elections in Denmark – but are heading for a historically bad result.

How and whether Frederiksen can govern the country for a third term is therefore not yet certain: In post-election surveys by the major television stations DR and TV2, unclear majorities emerged in the evening.

The three previous government parties – the Social Democrats, the right-wing liberal Venstre and the Moderaterne party of Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen – are now well away from a majority. But according to the forecasts, a classic left-green alliance would also be dependent on the support of another party, in the most likely case the Moderate Party, which is located in the political center.

Around 4.3 million Danes were called upon to cast their vote. A preliminary final result could be determined during election night.
