The use of electronic cigarettes and similar new generation products is rapidly increasing among children, adolescents and young people all over the world. As the use of these products, which are presented by the industry with the claim that they are less harmful to health than cigarettes, increases, reports published in scientific medical journals regarding their negative effects also increase. Moreover, despite being banned, electronic cigarette products sold over the internet continue to ensnare young people.

DISEASES ARE INCREASING

Drawing attention to the risks posed by e-cigarette products that poison young people, the President of the Yes to Health Association, Prof. Dr. Elif Dağlı, made the following warnings: “Although the production, import and marketing of these products are prohibited in our country, they are supplied from sales points and e-commerce channels. “New diseases caused by the use of new generation tobacco, nicotine and cannabis, which have become an epidemic in the United States, have started to be seen in our country and we are concerned that they will increase.”

VASP RISK

Prof. Dr. Dağlı, who added that e-cigarettes contain oily chemicals, aromas, toxins and cannabis, said; “These chemicals damage the lungs, whose main function is to provide oxygen to the body, and create new diseases that have not existed in medical literature before. EVALI is the international term given to lung damage caused by e-cigarettes in 2019. There were 68 deaths and 2,807 hospitalizations related to e-cigarette use in the United States. “The effect of e-cigarettes, which can cause damage to many organs, on the respiratory system has been well established. A disease caused by e-cigarettes in the respiratory system is the rupture of the lung membrane, also known as pneumothorax or VASP, which has been mentioned in the press,” he said.

Prof. Dr. Dağlı, who also provided information about VASP; “It is an English expression that describes the spontaneous rupture of the pleural membrane due to e-cigarette use. The toxins contained in e-cigarettes damage the air sacs of the lung and form bubbles. The surrounding support tissue is damaged and a perforated elastic inflammation layer is formed. Difficult breathing increases air pressure and the bubbles formed in the lung burst and the pleural membrane ruptures, requiring surgical treatment. One of the diseases caused by e-cigarettes is lipoid pneumonia. (Vaping-Related Lipoid Pneumonia). Unlike pneumonia caused by infection, the cause is not microbes but fatty acids that enter the lungs in e-cigarettes. “The oily chemicals in e-cigarettes stimulate the inflammatory process in the lung tissue,” he said.
