The EU wants to prepare better for emergencies: the military of the member countries includes a new strategy.

The EU Commission has published planning for possible disasters and threats. This includes 30 immediate measures and an action plan that shows the member countries how to prepare for emergencies. “New realities require a new level of willingness in Europe,” said Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at the performance.

The emergency preparation concerns families in flood areas and regions where there are heavy forest fires. But the commission goes on. “From growing geopolitical tensions and conflicts, hybrids and cyber security threats, foreign information manipulation and interference to climate change and increasing natural disasters, the EU must be willing to protect its citizens and the most important social functions that are crucial for democracy and daily life,” says in an announcement.

Part of the new EU strategy should be that minimum requirements for emergency willingness are being developed for the areas of schools, hospitals, passenger transport and telecommunications.

The EU advises that citizens are to create emergency rations that are sufficient for at least 72 hours. A crisis staff is to be set up in the EU to improve existing structures. In addition, disaster protection exercises are to be carried out in the member countries in which civilian and military organizations are used. The EU’s communication continues: “Cooperation with strategic partners such as NATO in the areas of military mobility, climate and security, new technologies, cyberspace, space and defense industry.”

When realizing the plans, the Commission presses the pace. Most measures are to be implemented this year, others like a European crisis management platform by 2027.
