In Turkey, there has been a decrease in the number of audiences going to the cinema. Since the doors of the first movie theaters were locked during the pandemic and the theaters were the last places to open, many people in the industry resigned and the audience moved away from the cinema. According to data, ticket prices in cinemas have increased 5.6 times in the last 3 years. The increase in prices, which was 17 lira on average in 2020, and 150 lira today, and the decrease in purchasing power have made going to the cinema a luxury. According to data from Boxoffice Turkey, while approximately 59.6 million people watched movies in the cinema in 2019, this number decreased to 17.4 million in 2020 and 12.5 million viewers in 2021. In 2022, 36.2 million viewers were reached. In 2023, the numbers fell even behind 2022, remaining at 31 million 542 thousand 707 spectators. The biggest reason for this is high ticket prices.

The official we spoke to after taking the photo shared the information that the prices will increase from 150 TL for students to 180 TL as of this week.

IT COSTS 1000 TL

In shopping malls located in a middle-class district, a family of 4’s cinema experience can cost an average of 1,000 TL when we add popcorn and drinks. There is a price difference of 30-50 TL between the student ticket and the full ticket. Inflation also affects citizens’ cultural activities. While some citizens find the solution in watching movies on digital platforms, others prefer to wait until their movies are broadcast on television. Fees for these platforms start from 200 TL per month on average, and the figures may vary depending on the number of people using them and the image quality.
