2:47 p.m.: Melania Trump defended her husband Donald in an interview on Fox News. “No, he’s not Hitler,” she said when asked what she thought of the criticism of the ex-president.

Among other things, Trump’s former chief of staff in the White House, General John Kelly, recently stated that Trump wanted generals “like Hitler had” during his time in office. Kelly didn’t call Trump Hitler, but said he fit the definition of a fascist. “It’s terrible,” said Melania Trump on Fox.

Years before he became Trump’s running mate, JD Vance had referred to Trump as “America’s Hitler.” Vance has since withdrawn this designation.

12:13 p.m.: The US election will probably be decided in seven states. There, in particular, the polls indicate a very close election outcome. Read more about this here.

7.45 a.m.: A comedian’s tasteless joke at a Donald Trump campaign event is becoming a problem for the Republican in the home stretch of the US election campaign. After celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez and Ricky Martin, several of Trump’s well-known party colleagues also condemned the statement about Puerto Rico. The Republican chairman there, Ángel Cintrón, demanded a personal apology from Trump – otherwise he would withdraw his support for the former president.

Comedian Tony Hinchcliffe, who specializes in insults, was among the speakers at the big campaign event in New York’s Madison Square Garden. He also joked about stereotypes about blacks, Palestinians and Jews – and then came: “There’s literally a floating island of trash in the middle of the ocean. I think it’s called Puerto Rico.”

Trump’s campaign team quickly distanced itself from Hinchcliffe’s words. “This joke does not reflect the views of President Trump or the campaign,” it said in a statement on Sunday. The ex-president himself did not comment directly on this. Puerto Rico is a US territory, but not a state. The residents there are US citizens but cannot vote. At the same time, there are several million Puerto Ricans living in the USA who are allowed to vote. Almost 500,000 Puerto Ricans live in the particularly hotly contested and important state of Pennsylvania alone. Harris’ campaign team immediately addressed the controversy in a video.

3:21 a.m.: At a campaign rally in the hotly contested US state of Georgia, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump defended himself against accusations of fascism. “The latest statement from Kamala and her campaign is that anyone who doesn’t vote for her is a Nazi,” the former president said Monday in Atlanta. “I’m not a Nazi, I’m the opposite of a Nazi.”

A few days ago, an interview with Trump’s former chief of staff caused a sensation in the USA: The Republican is a politician who “meets the general definition of fascists,” Trump’s former chief of staff John Kelly told the New York Times. Kelly also confirmed earlier reports that Trump had made positive comments about Adolf Hitler on several occasions.
