The Justice Department has a longstanding policy of not conducting ongoing investigations of sitting presidents. Trump was indicted in the case in August 2023, but the trial was postponed several times. The indictment accused Trump of trying to undo his 2020 election defeat and disenfranchise American voters. A separate case in Florida over mishandling of classified documents has already been suspended.
5 p.m.: Mike Davis, who has often been mentioned as a possible candidate for Attorney General under Trump, has caused outrage with a drastic statement. “I want to drag their political corpses through the streets, burn them and throw them off the wall,” he wrote on the “X” (formerly “Twitter”) platform. By that he would mean the Democrats, wrote the British online medium “Independent”. Davis added that of course this only meant “legally, politically and financially”.
Mike Davis pushed Trump’s judicial nominee through the Senate and defended him during investigations. He has described himself as Trump’s “viceroy,” according to Politico, but is not officially affiliated with Trump’s campaign team. Trump’s son described Davis as “the spearhead of my father’s defense against these corrupt Democratic prosecutors.” He is “exactly the kind of fighter I would like to see in a second Trump administration.”
However, after his tweet, Davis stated on “X” that he would not be considered for attorney general and would not be part of Trump’s administration. He “doesn’t speak for President Trump or anyone else.” But: “My full support goes to President Trump – and that will never change.”
9:27 a.m.: After Donald Trump’s election victory, thousands of civil servants are worried about their jobs. Trump announced several times during the election campaign that he wanted to significantly reduce the number of civil servants. At the end of his first term, Trump passed a law that was intended to make it easier for the government to fire civil servants. Joe Biden overturned the law after taking office.
