Asma al-Assad has filed for divorce in Moscow and is apparently planning to move to London. A petition for medical treatment in the UK is still pending.

Asma al-Assad, the wife of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, has filed for divorce, according to Turkish and Arab media reports. She is also aiming to move to London.

According to the Jerusalem Post, Asma al-Assad has asked a Russian court for permission to leave Moscow, where she and her family have found refuge since the fall of the Assad regime. Your application is therefore still being examined by the Russian authorities.

As the British newspaper “Tribune” reports, the step is also said to be related to health problems. Asma, who suffers from leukemia, has filed a petition to allow her to receive urgently needed medical treatment in the UK in addition to her divorce application.

Asma al-Assad was born in London in 1975 to Syrian parents and has both British and Syrian citizenship. Before her marriage to Bashar al-Assad, which concluded in 2000, she worked as an investment banker in the British capital. Her mother, Sahar al-Akhras, who is also a British citizen and former diplomat, is said to have already contacted renowned law firms in London to clarify the legal framework for Asma’s return.

The political background to the divorce makes the matter even more explosive. Bashar al-Assad, who led a brutal, dictatorial rule in Syria for decades, has already suffered massive political setbacks with the loss of power and the collapse of his regime. According to experts, the personal rift between him and Asma could have further influence on the family’s political legacy.
