Ayşe Arslan, a science teacher who has been doing space observations and research at Düzce BİLSEM for 5 years, and Ömer Selim Esen (14), a 9th grade student at Düzce Turgut Özal Anatolian High School, carried out a study within the scope of the “Asteroid Discovery Campaign” organized with the support of the International Astronomy Search Cooperation (IASC). .

The celestial object detected in 2021 by Arslan and Esen, who were included in the program where amateur astronomers tried to detect new asteroids, was registered as a new “asteroid” by the International Astronomical Search Cooperation.

Arslan and Esen won the right to name the asteroid.

“IT IS VERY VALUABLE FOR Türkiye”

Ayşe Arslan stated that after their application to the Asteroid Discovery Campaign was accepted, they started to make observations with the data sets sent.

Explaining that they examined these data with a special software, Arslan noted that they sent the reports they prepared to the International Astronomy Search Cooperation Minor Planet Center.

Arslan stated that they learned that this object was the first asteroid discovered by Turkey in the e-mail they received after 3 years and said, “The scientific value of this, the discovery of an asteroid for the first time in the solar system (the first asteroid detection by Turkish researchers), is very valuable for both us and Turkey.” he said.
